I loved the attitude of the Dickens family because they don’t push themselves on other people as being overly liberal hippies, in fact, they claim to be conservative and just “cheap”. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080422/NEWS05/804220396&imw=Y It’s true they’re definitely saving money, not to mention the environment, but I would rather label their energy saving ideas as genius instead of cheap. Maybe efficient.

I like that just because they’re living green, it doesn’t mean they’re out in the woods living in a tent and gathering berries – they have an indoor pool and still drive a pick-up truck because they’re able to make their own fuel and use solar panels. This is a great example of functional green living. I also really support their efforts towards educating people and spreading their ideas. As opposed to telling people they’re wrong for not living green, they just come up with suggestions for things like biodiesel buses that are not only environmentally friendly, but also are saving tax payer’s money. It frustrates me a little that a lot of people have trouble making changes to help the environment just because they don’t want to be inconvenienced. In reality, we’d save a lot of money in the long run if we switched to alternative fuels like corn or beets or windmills.

Our cutting edge project includes a overview of various crimes at UM during the months of February and March. We used google maps and the crime alert records kept by the university to pinpoint reported crimes on and near campus. Once we found the crime alerts archive and organized the crimes by time, date, location, and type of offense. Next we used google maps to pinpoint each crime with a few of the details. To make the map easier to analyze visually we made the pins different icons that represented each crime they were marking such as handcuffs for arrests, a car for vehicle theft, a spray can for vandalism, a robber for theft, and a “DO NOT ENTER” sign for trespassing.

I was astonished by the number of car thefts – who steals a car and thinks they can get away with it? Seriously, I never go out on campus without seeing a guy in an orange shirt riding around on a security bike or cart. If you really want a car it’s not too difficult to borrow a friends, or here’s a crazy idea, take the metro for $1.50…wow. Also, a bunch of them were during broad daylight.

Another thing that I found confusing, but I guess it makes a little bit of sense was where most of the crimes occurred – right in the middle of campus on Stanford Drive. How dumb are these people? If you’re going to commit a crime, try doing it in a remote part of campus where people, including both students and security, won’t see you. On the other hand, it makes sense that a lot of arrests occur by the circle drive because that’s where most intoxicated students wait for the Drunk Bus to take them to the grove and things tend get out of hand easier when a group of people are together under the influence. Still, you should have at least a little sense not to do stupid shit when there are always a bunch of cops hanging out there – unless you’re completely paralytic.

I was talking to my mom about the project and telling her how theft seemed to be the most common and told her about the crime alert emails we get and she asked about rapes. I don’t think I’ve heard of any rapes on campus since I’ve been in Miami, although I could be missing something. She was extremely surprised by this and said when she was at Michigan State for college there was probably a rape almost every day, usually in the laundry rooms which she said were creepy and in the basements of the dorms. I think we don’t have as many rapes because women are more educated on how to protect themselves more and we’re also a lot more aware of the severity of rape. Maybe the consequences weren’t so severe for the rapist so it was more common. Also, our laundry rooms in Pearson are in the middle of the floor in a room with huge glass windows that’s always lit and passed frequently by people in the hallway…not really an idea spot if you’re planning to rape someone. Still, I’m a little surprised I’ve yet to hear about one. This is a good reflection of our campus security and Blue Light system.

I think a map like ours should be available to students as a resource. It would promote awareness and inform people where to stay away from or maybe deter students from committing a crime if they knew how many people actually got arrested.

All I kept picturing in my head while reading these chapters were remixes to the current “technology turns on us and takes over the world” horror films where instead of robots evolving against humans, nature is the one to watch out for. The best passage for this was on page 36 as Weisman describes the gradual reintroduction of wildlife back into the city via bridges and other means. I feel like this movement would parallel a scene from a movie where robots make their way into our homes and turn against us. I liked the prediction that, “gradually, the asphalt jungle will give way to a real one.” It’s pretty crazy to imagine all of our cities that we view as indestructible turning to shambles because of simple water molecules expanding in the sidewalk cracks. If terrorists really wanted to create havoc, it seems like all they’d need to do is shut down the main water pumps in NYC to paralyze the subways, and ultimately, the entire city. I found this article to be eye-opening and although it seemed a little “out there” at first, I believe its predictions to be accurate now that I read the whole perspective.

throwaway society hits the nail on the head…everyone is guilty of the behavior described by this article because the nature of today’s society doesn’t value reusing our belongings. sure we read the tabloids that show angelina and brad recycling or something else similar to that but when it comes down to the reality of recycling and reusing things like cell phones, we are way too lazy. apathy plays an enormous role in this topic, along with ignorance. a lot of people, including myself, aren’t aware of the available options when discarding things like cell phones. i was shocked when i read that only 1% of cell phones are reused while over 130 million accumulate in landfills each year. this causes so much pollution, specifically contributing to leaching of our clean water supply. in my opinion, young people are the worse offenders to these statistics because we’re constantly getting new phones just to have the latest and greatest thing on the market…case and point: since august my suite mate has gone through at least six phones, all of them blackberrys or something equally as nice simply because she “got tired of her old one.” sorry if your phone can’t send live videos while reading your mind to call whoever you’re thinking of, how about trying to hold onto it for more than a year and a half?

Choosing to write this blog isn’t weighed so heavily on the specific article, http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/10571, i read, but more towards the general topic of environment vs. economy. politics are constantly debating which is more important: protecting the natural world in which we live or protecting our money and jobs. politicians are constantly changing their stance on this sticky issue to better please their constituents and that’s where the problem is. as a nation we should have uniform laws and regulations that prevent such issues from even coming up in the first place. for example, why should environmental policies vary by state when the pollution ultimately ruins the nation’s environment, not just one state’s. also, in terms of the economy, i understand that plants create jobs, but if we keep up the harmful nature of these plants, jobs aren’t going to matter because we won’t be around to benefit from them due to all the pollution created.

I enjoyed the article Move Over, Oil, There’s Money in Texas Wind and think that wind energy is a plausible and sensible solution to both pollution and scarcity of fossil fuels. Even though a few groups discouraged using turbines because the blades kill birds and bats, the benefits outweigh these disadvantages. Wind energy is nearly a pollution-free power source and stores energy well for windless days.

It’s good to see a state with a reputation of relying on oil and fossil fuels, like Texas, switch to wind energy. Success in Texas should carry over to other states because the article reports that the United States could increase the power from wind from 1% to 20%, powering a potential 4.5 million homes.

I wonder if we’ll see a situation similar to the EV1 with the oil industries intervening to maintain their monopoly on US power…

While I agree with the main message of the film Who Killed the Electric Car?, I’m skeptical of their statistics and facts used to persuade the viewers. I think that GM’s actions weren’t as smart as they should’ve been but I also don’t completely believe the film maker’s point of view.

-The film states that there was a lengthy waiting list for the EV1, and therefore, a high demand for the vehicle.

-In a blog posted by Dave Barthmuss of GM Communications, http://fyi.gmblogs.com/2006/06/who_ignored_the_facts_about_th.html, he states that although 5,000 people were initially interested in leasing the EV1, only 50 people followed through.

-I believe the real numbers fall somewhere in between the two sides. If GM had advertised more and produced a stronger marketing campaign more people would’ve wanted to lease. Also, the EV1 was only offered in southern CA so GM wasn’t really giving it a fair chance to gather demand.

Bartmuss insists that GM is doing more that other car companies in terms of producing environmentally friendly vehicles. I have high doubts on this claim – companies like Toyota and Honda appear to be the biggest advertisers for hybrids and fuel efficient vehicles. GM profits more with SUVs than they do selling small cars. This explains why they teamed up with the government and oil industry to fight the California Air Resources Board ZEV mandate.

When it all boils down, we live in a world where money is valued more than morals – for this reason, GM would rather make a profit with SUVs than save the environment EV1.

A question you might want to ask yourself is which would you choose?

After Monday’s class and reading Kyle H’s blog, https://www.courses.miami.edu/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab=courses&url=/bin/common/course.pl?course_id=_216711_1&frame=top, I decided to look up ways that individuals can reduce their environmental impact, specifically while driving. I came across the site greenercars.com and and found a lot of applicable advice in the the section http://www.greenercars.org/drivingtips.htm. As younger drivers, let’s be honest, the majority of us are definitely guilty of the very first topic: “jack rabbit” starts. The site explains that accelerating quickly doesn’t just use up fuel a lot quicker than moderate acceleration, it’s awful in terms of pollution created. One specific fact that caught my eye states, “One second of high-powered driving can produce nearly the same volume of carbon monoxide emissions as a half hour of normal driving.” Another good tip suggests combining your trips into one big excursion as opposed to running short, separate errands because starting up your car and driving a “cold” engine is less efficient. Another factor that contributes to more waste is the weight of your car. I know I’m guilty of letting my car accumulate as much crap as possible because I’m just too lazy to be bothered cleaning it out. However, a lighter car increases fuel economy. Another contributor to fuel economy is tire pressure – maintaining recommended pressure helps a lot.

I know that a lot of people – especially Kyle H. – might disregard these suggestions because they aren’t drastic improvements and they individually they don’t seem like they’re helping the environment. But think about Monday’s discussion and how if we all do a small thing to reduce pollution, the impact really does add up to something greater. I know that’s pretty cliche, but it would work. Plus, the tips from the website aren’t asking you to exert a whole lot of effort. Although I don’t have a car here at school, once I get back to Chicago I’m going to try my best to be conscious of my driving and car maintenance…you should too.

A string of related blogs from Environblog caught my eye. A major issue between several bloggers debates the pro’s and con’s of pregnant women and fish consumption. These blogs really caught my eye because of their extreme contradicting opinions. It seems like one month an organization will publish recommendations to eat fish and the next month they’re sending out urgent notifications to severely limit consumption of the same fish.

It seems like this issue should be something easily decided by weighing benefits against risks. While researchers from the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition report that “the benefits derived from the omega-3 fatty acids in fish outweigh the risks of mercury poisoning; omega-3s contain nutrients important to developing brain and nervous systems,” others disagree. The FDA suggests that expectant mothers shouldn’t eat more than 12oz. of fish per week. Most parties agree that it’s wise for all to avoid fish containing especially high levels of mercury such as Albacore Tuna and shark. The majority also seems to agree that safer fish with lower levels of mercury include Salmon and Tilapia.

Whatever the correct number of ounces is, I like the the author’s opinion from this article. Instead of debating how much fish is healthy to consume, why not just refrain from dumping harmful chemicals like mercury in the ocean in the first place. Eating fish has so many natural benefits that we shouldn’t ruin these with man-made pollution.

History is done with and should stay in the past. Reading takes me entirely too long, given that I’m most likely the world’s slowest reader. And writing can be too open ended for my liking. Math on the other hand, you’re guaranteed to get a right answer. There’s no debating that 2+2=4. That’s that. As for science, all you need is a logical explanation. Reasoning that makes sense and is difficult to misinterpret. Given my feelings on these general subjects, it’s pretty apparent why I prefer to study sciences as opposed to liberal arts.
Ever since I was little I loved math. Whether I insisted on counting every American flag I saw on a trip to Washington, D.C. when I was six until my parents told me to stop before I drove them crazy, or I stayed up night after night playing Sudoku like a loser, I’ve always had a thing for numbers and logic. As for science, I like that there’s reasoning behind theories and laws. Ask me to interpret the symbolism in Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and I’d struggle for words. Ask me to try and figure out why something’s broken and I’d attempt to take it apart and put it back together to fix it.
Besides my natural interest in math and science, my dad is a mechanical engineer. When senior year came around and we were expected to know “what we wanted to do with the rest of our life,” I guess I thought I could get the most help with classes if I took something my dad was good at. Engineering has so many different fields to look into and each one involves improving something in someway. I like the idea of fixing problems or making something better than it was when you started.
Particularly, I think engineers are the solution to fixing a lot of the world’s environmental problems. Since the profession typically creates the machines causing most problems we face today, it’s only natural that engineers can also be the most qualified to fix them.
